China Mobile is pessimistic about the development of TD-SCDMA, China’s homegrown 3G standard, because of handset problems and the relative strength of other standards.
Chinese operators are also already preparing to compete over who will develop a network for WCDMA, the European 3G standard, after the TD-SCDMA network is in place.
The source said that China Mobile is working to ensure TD-SCDMA is ready in time for the Olympics in August, despite problems with the network and with handsets.
"China Mobile employees have been using TD-SCDMA handsets since November 2007 for testing purposes. They can use some 3G functions, such as video telephone and high-speed download. However, due to quality problems with TD-SCDMA handsets, the results of the trials have not been good," the source said.
"However, even though there are many problems, the TD-SCDMA network will be put into use before the Olympics," the source said.
The source said that TD-SCDMA handsets are encountering difficulties. "One reason [China Mobile is pessimistic about TD-SCDMA] is that TD-SCDMA handsets, which are produced in China, have serious problems." The source added that the earliest that phone numbers for TD-SCDMA handsets will be released to the general public will be in May of this year.
Compared with handsets supporting the WCDMA network, TD-SCDMA handsets are much weaker in both quantity and quality, the source said.
Another problem with TD-SCDMA is that the network is unstable, and does not operate well in cities with many tall buildings, such as Shanghai, the source said, since the buildings obstruct the signals.
WCDMA appears to be the preferred choice among Chinese operators. According to the source, competition is already heating up over who will be permitted to develop WCDMA in China after TD-SCDMA is in use.

The sea level around Shanghai has risen 120 millimeters since 1977 - a level higher than the national average.
Many scientists believe rising sea levels are caused by global warming but the city’s continuous land subsidence exacerbates the problem.
"It’s time we took action over rising sea levels," Chen Manchun, an SOA official who takes charge of recording sea levels, told Shanghai Daily.
He said the sea level around the country’s coast had risen by 90 millimeters over the past 30 years and that Shanghai was 30 millimeters above the average.

Believe it or not, but Beijing Authorities have banned outdoor Kebab stalls… You know, these convenient and juicy 羊肉串 that you can buy for 2rmb anywhere at anytime…
The reason? If I refer to some Chinese articles, just in order to protect the blue sky of Beijing for the Olympic Games…
Two others official reasons: kebabs vendors usually don’t have any license to sell food and they use bad quality coal.
That’s right, let’s prohibit outdoor barbecues, it’s obviously more polluting than:
- hundred thousands of cars and trucks (fyi, trucks are only allowed to drive along during the night. Officially, also in order to reduce pollution. Actually, it’s just because in the night, everything is dark & everybody is sleeping, so trucks are just not existing…)
- factories
- buildings under construction
- air condition
and so on…
Moreover, these Kebab stalls are often done by XinJiang guys, and everybody knows that they are only robbers and criminals (last week a Chinese friend of mine has lost her wallet. She doesn’t know where and when exactly. But, obviously, it was the fact of a XinJiang guy!).
"I was wrong, I won’t do it again." said a kebab waiter with a smile to admit its mistakes to police officers.
Just a small remark: if he didn’t admit it, he could be fined 50000rmb for his "mistake".
As the article said, those guys are just killers with their kebabs smoke.
