The Eastern culture emanates a unique charm as a result of its rich heritage and enduring history. In recent years it is captivating even more attention: as a result, an Eastern-styled naming trend is appearing in the Western world.

No doubt you are familiar with the game of Sudoku. This 9×9 matrix number game has captured the hearts of millions of fans world-wide. But you may not realize that this game had been published in the United States as early as the 1970’s by Dell Puzzle Magazine. Initially named Number Place, it remained indistinguishable among thousands of number related games and therefore did not gain popularity. In 1984, Japanese puzzle group Nikoli discovered the game, brought it to Japan and gave it the name Sudoku. In March 1997, this game caught the attention of  a New Zealand visitor to Japan who quickly became infatuated with it. In the six years following, he has developed many related software and websites for this game, propelling it to its Western fan base.

ZenZui: a new mobile content browser developed by MicrosoftIn current naming trends, another Eastern-styled name with what appears to be Chinese influence has also attracted the attention of Labbrand Researchers. ZenZui is the brand name for a new mobile content browser developed by Microsoft. A Chinese person who sees the name may infer that “Zen” and “Zui” are the pinyin form of two Chinese characters:
= zěn = how, = zèn = slander
= zuì = most), = zuì = drunken, = zuǐ = mouth.
Interestingly enough, ZenZui’s website indicates that the Executive Leaders of its development team is composed entirely of Westerners.
Zui is actually the acronym for the new technology behind the product: Zooming User Interface.
Zen is an ancient Buddhist philosophy that has, in modern times, come to represent ideals of wisdom, esthetics, serenity and practicality. The practice of Zen is marked by inward and highly personalized meditation and discovery.
Regardless of its etymology, the name ZenZui has an unmistakably Eastern appeal. It stands out among other recent software release, such as Vista and iPhone; this name gives the product added personality and recognition.

Globalization is a development trend nowadays. Since the Eastern culture is catching more and more global attention, Western consumers and companies are increasingly keen for an Eastern-styled name. Perhaps it’s time to consider developing a uniquely Eastern name for your new product.
