The Algerian petty criminal Chérif Bouchelaleg might have faded into anonymity but for the profound inspiration he gave to France’s interior minister and presidential hopeful Nicolas Sarkozy.
Moved by Bouchelaleg’s sad story, his French wife and six children, Mr Sarkozy abolished the law that stated immigrant offenders should be deported after serving their sentence.
But it all came back to haunt him on Tuesday, when Bouchelaleg went on a crime spree in Haute-Savoie, stealing three cars in a week and finally driving a stolen BMW at high speed towards the prime minister Dominique de Villepin’s armed police guard, who opened fire.
Mr de Villepin, who was having lunch with local politicians in the small town of Sallanches near the Swiss and Italian borders, was not the target of an attack. The clash was an unfortunate coincidence as Bouchelaleg was trying to flee the scene of a crime.
"This is symbolic. By his irresponsible policies Sarkozy is putting the state, and France, in peril," said Jean-Marie Le Pen, who this week vowed he would again reach the second round of the presidential race.
Yesterday Mr Sarkozy said that Bouchelaleg was in custody and should face "the severest possible punishment for repeat offenders".
And what is the severest punishment for such kind of offenders in France: an admonition saying: "OK good boy, don’t do it again, please!"
Thanks Mr. Sarkozy!
Today it’s a fucking robber, tomorrow it will be a recidivist rapist… But you have to forgive these people, actually it’s your fault if they did it, because either you have too much money (and you didn’t give to them! What a skinflint you are!!!), or you’re a beautiful lady (so, you’ve create envy, and moreover you’ve forgotten to wear your chador).
When I hear about abolishement of the law that stated immigrant offenders should be deported after serving their sentence, it sounds like the end of slavery or abolishment of death sentence… Whatsoever… I guess that such kind of politician puppet needs media announcement like that, like an Historic fact…

the law that stated immigrant offenders should be deported after serving their sentence."I think it is normal…. because if you are a french national you will only have to serve your sentence… so a foreigner have a double penality, that do not respect the french motto "liberty, equality, fraternity"So what to do ?Why no directly deport the offender to his country. (of course deport only if he do something really bad, not just smoking some canabis or things like that
)It will save france money (it cost a lot to keep someone in Jail), and it will be more fair.88

I agree with you on the fact that we only have to deport people who have done something really bad.
And I also agree that we should clean our jails by deporting such kind of people back to their home.
I’m glad to see that you want to save France money!
But concerning this "double sentence", it’s not the right term. If anybody has done a fault, it’s not a question of saving money, but a question of justice (respect for the victims, lesson for the accused…) to accomplish his sentence, and then to be sent back to his home.
That, and only that, is in line witn the French motto "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity".

What do you think of the guy who’s been held in custody in Thailand for 5 years now for being caught with pot in his diving tanks? Should he be sent back to France before or after having been put to death?

Diablotim, did you read the title of my post?
(Moreover, for your information, this story, about this French guy with pot inside his diving tanks, was at Bali (Indonesia), not in Thailand: http://www.michael-blanc.com )
